On October 1, 1911 Kemp Battle and Frank Winslow began practicing law together in Rocky Mount, NC. They met as freshmen in Chapel Hill, and became friends, classmates, and frequent Di-Phi debate competitors. In 1909 Frank Winslow graduated as valedictorian, with Kemp Battle finishing second, and Frank Porter Graham finishing third in their class. Frank Porter Graham later became the first president of the consolidated University of North Carolina. The three men, each of whom went on to become esteemed leaders in North Carolina, roomed together at Carolina.
Kemp Battle started a solo practice in Rocky Mount in 1910, and Frank Winslow joined him in 1911. It was the same year that the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad expanded the train depot in downtown Rocky Mount, whose population had grown to over 3,000 in part because of the successful railroad line. It was also the same year that the historic Rocky Mount Mills became electrified after one of the first steam turbines in North Carolina was installed replacing a water wheel that had powered a few electric lights. In fact one of the first jobs handled by the law firm was preparation of a deed for Rocky Mount Mills. Records show the fee was $5.
In 1965 Kemp Battle made an impassioned speech to the Rocky Mount Kiwanis Club about the need for a new hospital to serve the citizens. Having battled tuberculosis as a young man, he knew well the importance of quality health care. By 1971 a new state-of- the-art hospital was open and serving the citizenry. This is one of many examples of the level of public engagement Kemp Battle and Frank Winslow exhibited. Both were civic leaders, guiding the community forward with a quiet confidence and steadfast commitment. Walk through the doors of our offices today, and you’ll find a multitude of experienced attorneys carrying on that tradition.
Battle and Winslow began their practice in a time of growth, with a well-established cotton mill and productive farmland in the surrounding counties fueling prosperity. Providing expert legal representation to new business and industry, as well as farmers and families, Battle & Winslow became an established and trusted name in the community and beyond. Representing local and regional clients in general business matters, taxation and litigation, the attorneys at the firm established themselves as hard working, knowledgeable, ethical and fairly priced. In that regard, our firm is much the same today.
But Rocky Mount, Raleigh, and Eastern North Carolina grew and changed, and so did our firm, expanding in size, reputation, and scope of work. Battle Winslow has grown in the number of attorneys, and our practice areas have expanded to include healthcare, government, bankruptcy, real estate, and family law. We have extensive litigation experience, and the strategic insights to know when to go to court and when to settle matters out of court.
Confident. Competent. Held in the highest esteem by our colleagues. Having lawyers who have been described as ‘Lawyers’ Lawyer.’ Yet we work for you – for the businesses and families that create and live in Eastern North Carolina. That will not change.
